Since we first launched BEVAS coffee earlier this year, we’ve received some consistently-asked questions from our followers and customers. In this article, we’ve addressed some of the more common and specific questions we’ve been asked recently.

Is BEVAS coffee sourced from a single origin?
Our coffee is sourced from Brazil, India and Uganda. This guarantees our supply-chain and provides us with a constant supply of coffee with which to meet demand, regardless of the seasonal effect on coffee production. Single-source coffee can sometimes suffer from supply issues, leading some manufacturers to seek alternative suppliers with which to fill shortfalls – a practice that offers no guarantees of quality or consistency. BEVAS has made the conscious decision to avoid these issues and prioritise quality in any eventuality.

Is BEVAS coffee supplied from pesticide-free farms?
All BEVAS coffee is sourced from farms that are free of pesticide use and all of our farmers and suppliers are Rainforest Alliance certificated.

Is BEVAS coffee freshly and slowly roasted to maintain the beneficial nutrients of the coffee bean?
BEVAS coffee beans are both slow roasted & freshly roasted to ensure our quality and taste standards are upheld.

How is BEVAS coffee packaged and does it meet the “gold standard” of being flushed with nitrogen?
BEVAS coffee is supplied in fully-recyclable packaging and is nitrogen-flushed, thus protecting the product during transportation, preserving the freshness of our coffee beans and minimising any potential oxidation. You may be wondering if the nitrogen flushing procedure is damaging in any way to your health. Rest assured that nitrogen flushing is perfectly safe. In fact, about 78% of the air you breathe is composed of nitrogen, which makes it a very practical option.

Does BEVAS coffee have a high Cupping Score?
BEVAS incentivises our suppliers and farmers to provide a coffee that can achieve a cupping score of 90+, ensuring they receive a good price for maintaining and delivering a consistency with their crops.

The coffee Cupping score is a numerical representation of a coffee’s quality, awarded based on a standardised evaluation process known as Cupping. This scoring system was established by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and is utilised to differentiate specialty coffees from commercial-grade beans.

Cupping scores range from 0 to 100, with the following classifications:

  • 80-89 points: Specialty Coffee
  • 90-100 points: Exceptional Specialty Coffee
  • Below 80 points: Not Specialty Coffee

During the cupping process, various sensory attributes of the coffee are evaluated, including:

  • Fragrance/Aroma
  • Flavour
  • Aftertaste
  • Acidity
  • Body
  • Uniformity
  • Balance
  • Cleanliness
  • Sweetness
  • Overall Impression

Each attribute is scored on a scale, typically from 1 to 10, and the total score is calculated by summing these individual scores while accounting for any defects in the coffee.

Is BEVAS coffee laboratory-tested for aflatoxins and moulds?
BEVAS performs random batch-testing on every production batch to ensure, as much as possible, that our coffee is free of aflatoxins and mould.

Is BEVAS coffee low in acrylamide?
Recent studies have shown that acrylamide levels peak early in the heating process and then decline. So lighter-coloured coffee beans actually have higher levels of acrylamide than darker beans which are roasted longer. BEVAS coffee is medium-roasted, which produces acceptably low-levels of acrylamide. Nearly all foods which are grilled, fried, roasted or baked contain an unavoidable element of acrylamide. Coffee, however, contains much lower levels than foods with high levels of starch & sugar that are cooked quickly.
